Call for Residencies 2024

The Community of Madrid’s Regional Ministry of Culture and Tourism is opening a call for the 16th edition of artist-in-residence programmes at the Centro Coreográfico Canal for creators and professional companies (established and emerging), whose working lines are in the fields of dance and movement arts, with the objective of creating, researching and/or developing new choreographic languages.
The purpose of this artist-in-residence programme – by making the studios in the Centro Coreográfico Canal available to creators and companies – is to support choreographic creation and consolidate companies’ professional, providing resources and spaces with exceptional conditions that give these artists the time and space to research, create, train themselves and share their creative processes.
The creators and companies will be selected pursuant to these RULES:
ONE. RECIPIENTS
This artist-in-residence programme is addressed to Madrilenian, national and international creators and companies, where creators and companies residing in the Community of Madrid shall be given selection priority.
TWO. TYPES OF RESIDENCIES
- Creation residencies
This type of residency is for creators and companies who want to develop a choreographic creation work. The majority of the stage production must be developed at the Centro Coreográfico Canal. The Regional Ministry of Culture and Tourism will make the facilities of the Centro Coreográfico Canal available to artists and companies under these terms:-The maximum residency period shall be two months, with the option of full day (between January and July 2024).
-The period of residence at the Canal Choreographic Centre must be a minimum of 4 weeks.
-The studios will be made available on the dates and times previously agreed with the Centro Coreográfico Canal.
-Publicising and support for communications will be provided.
-Photo shoot and audiovisual recording for one of the shows.
-The residency will conclude with the exhibition of the process between September and October 2024, within the Canal Baila cycle that will be held at Teatros del Canal, in the Community of Madrid.
-The project presented in the Canal Baila cycle must have a minimum duration of 60 minutes and a maximum of 75 minutes.
-The Regional Ministry of Culture and Tourism shall give each of the 10 projects selected under this discipline up to 10.000 euros, with the aim of facilitating the project creation process, which shall conclude with a show of the process in a series put together for this purpose. An exhibition fee (to be determined) shall be paid for this exhibition, between the management of the Centro Coreográfico Canal and the creator or company.
-For the exhibition established in the previous point, the Teatros del Canal will make available to the artists personal and material specified in the theater rider. Any technical or personnel need that exceeds the foregoing must be previously authorized by the artistic direction of the Teatros del Canal.
-The artists and companies must have sufficient technical staff to set up the exhibition. In case of not being able to contribute it in its entirety, it must be communicated at the beginning of the project to the artistic direction, which will authorize, where appropriate, said exception in writing.
-The payment of the amount established in the previous point shall be processed after the project has been submitted and approved by the centre, detailing its budget and the working calendar.
-The fee for participating in this series shall be paid after the exhibition is held, by submitting the pertinent invoice.
-The Regional Ministry of Culture and Tourism shall not pay for travel or per diem expenses or accommodation in Madrid for resident creators and companies.
-The creators and companies shall be responsible for paying the artists and any other people involved in doing each of the activities, as well as any tax or social security applicable.
-The creators and companies are obligated to comply with regulations in force on labour issues, social security and health and safety at work.
-The creators and companies must have authorisation from all owners of the affected property rights and their legal and peaceful holding.
-The creators and companies commit to including the logo of the Community of Madrid on all dissemination made on social media, as well as all communications and publicity, both during the series and the subsequent tours of shows done after the project.
-The monetary amounts mentioned in these rules may, as applicable, be paid via the public company Madrid Cultura y Turismo, SAU
Obligations of the creators and companies selected for this type:
For the effects of this call, the artist-in-residencies are understood as not only including the assignment of a space, but a much broader concept that integrates training, mediation with new audiences, assistance and the creation of a community. To this end, the selected parties must:
-Have a separate legal personality and capacity to contract.
-Read and accept the COVID-19 protocols for use of the Centro Coreográfico Canal and observe all rules and standards established in the documentation mailed, as well as forwarding this information to all personnel at the company.
-Mentioning and publicising the logo of the Centro Coreográfico Canal in the Community of Madrid on all dissemination and communication materials.
-After leaving the Centro Coreográfico Canal and after the residence has ended, submit an explanatory report on their stay within a two-month period.
-Sign a letter-commitment when accepting the residency.
-Remain at the residency space during the agreed dates. Unjustified absence will lead to the cancellation of the conditions for this type of residency, either totally or partially.
- Research residencies
This type of residency is aimed at supporting the exploration, research and development of projects in the creation progress.
The Regional Ministry of Culture and Tourism will make the facilities of the CENTRO COREOGRÁFICO CANAL available to the artists and companies selected for this type of residency under these terms:
-The maximum stay for this residency is one month (between January and December 2024)
-The studios will be made available on the dates and times previously agreed with the Centro Coreográfico Canal.
-Publicising and support for communications will be provided.
-The residency will conclude with a rehearsal open to the general public at the Centro Coreográfico Canal in the Community of Madrid.
-The Regional Ministry of Culture and Tourism shall give each of the 20 projects selected under this discipline up to 2500 euros, with the aim of facilitating the process of exploration, research and development of the project, which shall conclude with a show of the process.
-The payment of the 2500 euros will be processed after the residency and open rehearsal to the public have finished, pursuant to the approved project, which will include at least a report, description and composition of the artistic team, breakdown of the residency budget and working calendar.
-For the open rehearsal established in the previous point, the Teatros del Canal will make available to the artists personal and material specified in the theater rider. Any technical or personnel need that exceeds the foregoing must be previously authorized by the artistic direction of the Teatros del Canal.
-The artists and companies must have sufficient technical staff to set up the exhibition. In case of not being able to contribute it in its entirety, it must be communicated at the beginning of the project to the artistic direction, which will authorize, where appropriate, said exception in writing.
-The Regional Ministry of Culture and Tourism shall not pay for travel or per diem expenses or accommodation in Madrid.
-The creators and companies shall be responsible for paying the artists and any other people involved in doing each of the residencies, as well as any tax or social charges that are applicable.
-The creators and companies are obligated to comply with regulations in force on labour issues, social security and health and safety at work.
-The creators and companies must have authorisation from all owners of the affected property rights and their legal and peaceful holding.
-The creators and companies commit to including the logo of the Community of Madrid on all dissemination done on social media, as well as all communications and publicity, both during the residencies and the subsequent tours or shows done after the project.
-The monetary amounts mentioned in these rules may, as applicable, be paid via the public company Madrid Cultura y Turismo, SAU
Obligations of the creators and companies selected for this type:

-They must hold an open rehearsal of the piece upon finishing the residency.
-They must mention and publicise the logo in a visible place of the Centro Coreográfico Canal in the Community of Madrid on all dissemination and communication materials.
-After leaving the Centro Coreográfico Canal and after the residence has ended, submit a descriptive report on their stay within a one-month period.
-They shall sign a letter-commitment when accepting the residency.
-They shall remain at the residency space during the agreed dates. Unjustified absence will lead to the cancellation of the conditions for this type of residency, either totally or partially.
THREE. SELECTION OF THE CREATORS AND COMPANIES TO PARTICIPATE IN THE ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAMME AT THE CENTRO COREOGRÁFICO CANAL:
For selection, the projects submitted will be evaluated by a committee of professionals from the field of dance, as well as by the management of Teatros del Canal and the Centro Coreográfico Canal.
These factors will be evaluated for the selection of resident artists and companies:
-The quality of the proposal submitted and its coherence.
-The innovation of the project.
-The experience and career of the individual or company
-Supports already received and their impact.
-Among the projects submitted for both types of residency, the creators and companies residing in the Community of Madrid shall have priority.
If in case a European company is selected, the Goethe-Institut Madrid will provide accommodation for the duration of the residency. This will be managed directly with the Goethe-Institut Madrid. The Community of Madrid is in no way responsible for this part of the residence.
FOUR. DOCUMENTATION APPLICANTS MUST SUBMIT
The receipt period for projects shall open on 18th October 2023 and end on 15th November 2023. Applications must be made using the online forms on the Centro Coreográfico Canal / Teatros del Canal website, attaching the requested documentation. This documentation can be provided either in Spanish or in English.
Within a maximum of two months from the end of the registration period, the list of creators and companies that will participate in the year 2024 in the two types of residencies at the Canal Choreography Centre will be published on the Canal Theatre website.

FIVE. INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY
The participants declare under their responsibility that the project submitted is exclusively their own intellectual creation and completely original.
If any project uses pre-existing works or intellectual property that are subject to any intellectual property right, they declare and guarantee that they hold the pertinent authorisations for using them, pursuant to all the purposes established in the present call.
The participants have the exclusive responsibility for violating any of the terms of the previous paragraphs and shall be held liable with third parties for any claims or demands that could occur.
Participants whose projects end up being selected shall grant in favour of the Community of Madrid, the Centro Coreográfico Canal and Teatros del Canal a non-exclusive, worldwide assignment for the maximum time permitted by law of the written, audiovisual, graphic or any other type of contents produced while creating the project in question.
Commercial uses of these contents are excluded from this assignment, where assignment is limited to the sole purpose of the aforesaid organisations being able to conduct informational and promotional activities of their own activities through any dissemination or support medium, including online.
SIX. IMAGE RIGHTS
With the aim of being able to comply with the terms of the previous section, the individuals and companies selected accept and authorise their physical appearance, voice and name, as applicable, appearing on all types of physical and digital media (videos, photographs, posters, etc.) taken at the spaces of the Centro Coreográfico Canal or Teatros del Canal for their informational or promotional dissemination, with the proviso and delimitation of those uses or applications that could violate their right to honour and reputation, under the terms set out by law.

EIGHT. ACCEPTANCE AND ADHERENCE TO RULES
Participants, by applying for this call for artists-in-residence at the Centro Coreográfico Canal of the Community of Madrid, accept the conditions established herein.
Artistic creators and companies may apply for two successive calls and obtain one creation residency each year. If any parties have benefitted in two consecutive years, one year must pass before they can obtain a new residency.
An application for residency may be done with the same project in the same creation type in at most two calls, with the aim of finishing the project.
