The Víctor Ullate Ballet – Region of Madrid has had a residency established since 2009 at the Centro Danza Canal (CDC) of the Teatros de Canal in the Region of Madrid.
Maestro and choreographer Víctor Ullate founded his dance company in 1988, meaning he will be celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2018. Over the course of these years as a director, Ullate has managed to instil ballet with its own personality, which has been reflected in different choreographies. From September of this year, Lucía Lacarra will be working as the artistic director of the company, who takes the baton from Eduardo Lao, the former artistic director for over two decades.
The working line of Víctor Ullate has been characterised by improving and strengthening the classical technique to make the balance of his team’s skills more homogeneous, as well as by the diversification of styles: from a classical repertory to the characteristic neoclassical for which the company is known. These factors, as well as the exclusivity of his repertoire, are what have defined the personality and characterised the mastery of a unique style, which have in turn assured the company’s success and continuity.
At present, this dance troupe has 20 dancers from different countries, including Italy, Cuba, Japan, Australia and Spain. And in addition to own repertoire, this season it will also be working with emerging choreographers linked to the Centro Danza Canal, such as KOR’SIA and La Phármaco.
Its most recent performances are Carmen (2017), El Amor Brujo (2014), Bolero (2013), El Arte de la Danza (2012) and Wonderland (2010). At this time, maestro Ullate, Eduardo Lao and the rest of the troupe are working on staging its next performance, 30 Años de Danza, which will premiere at the Teatros del Canal.
