Canal Choreographic Center
The Centro Coreográfico Canal, reporting to the Region of Madrid, opened its doors in 2009 as a space for artists working in the creation and dissemination of dance and other arts of movement.
The building is integrated into the Teatros del Canal complex and has nine rehearsal studies and a conference room.
It is also a space for interaction and exchange. The Canal studios are the perfect laboratory for many projects, from large productions to solo affairs. It is my will, and my firm desire, that creation, research, innovation and experimentation constitute the vital energy of the Centro Coreográfico Canal. It is a centre for all styles of dance, from hip-hop to flamenco through the world of ballet and contemporary dance. It is an environment dedicated to creation and to creators, both established and emerging companies and young choreographers in search of a workspace. It is a centre for choreographic expression and experimentation in all its forms.
I want the centre to be recognised as a space for dance open to diversity and that remains at the service of the works throughout the creation phase and after (gestation, rehearsal, performances). A place where the public can also witness the creative process, inviting audiences for occasional open rehearsals and masterclasses by professionals. A unique place that brings together resources to promote dance. The team of professionals at the Centro Coreográfico Canal remains available to resident artists for mentoring and advice to support the companies and choreographers. As part of the mentoring process, the pieces created at the Centro Coreográfico Canal will carry the seal of the Teatros de Canal.
The centre is committed to supporting the companies of Madrid and offers comprehensive information on all the professional dance groups in the Region of Madrid, covering a broad range of styles, to professionals and promoters from all over the world.
The Centro Coreográfico Canal’s commitment to dance professionals is embodied in its annual call for applications for the residencies programme. A panel of renowned professionals select the successful candidates who receive funding to support the creation and research process of the project, culminating in a public performance of the works created at the centre».
